Goodbye Kyle Dean Massey and Willemijin Verkaik!
Willemijin Verkaik and Kyle Dean Massey both departed the Broadway Company of Wicked yesterday, May 26th. Willemijin has been playing Elphaba since 2007 in Various Companies of Wicked across the world, and has performed the role in German, Dutch and English, making her the first and only actress to do so. Her glorious voice can be heard singing these incredible songs on the Wicked German Cast Recording. Kyle Dean Massey joined the Wicked family in 2007 on the First National Tour as an ensemble member and understudy for Fiyero (I was lucky enough to see him perform the first time he ever played the role, June 1st 2007 matinee in Columbus, OH.) He remained with the tour for a year before moving on to the Broadway company where he appeared in the same track until he left in june 2009 to do Next to Normal. He once again returned to the ensemble u/s Fiyero track until January 2010 when Aaron Tveit left Next to Normal for Good, and Kyle Dean departed the company to do that show again, playing Gabe for a year. 2 weeks after the closing of Next to Normal in January 2011, he was back on the Gershwin stage playing Fiyero again, but only for a few weeks. He returned to the role briefly at the end of the summer of 2011, and then went back out on tour for three months as Fiyero, finishing in early 2012. He joined the Broadway company for a substantial run (this one) in July 2012. Best Witches to both, and to both replacements, Lindsay Mendez and Derek Klena!
