Musical Monday: Andy Kelso in Kinky Boots!

Andy Kelso
Hey y'all, I know it is Tuesday, this post was scheduled to go up yesterday but something went wrong. For this week's "Musical Monday," I will be talking a little about seeing Andy Kelso as Harry in Kinky Boots on Broadway.  I saw him play the role in August, and he was great.

Kelso as Fiyero
For those unaware of Kelso's history with Wicked: Kelso played Fiyero on the First National Tour of Wicked from February-August 2012 and left to join the pre-Broadway engagement of Kinky Boots.  Now, Harry is not the largest role in the show by any means, but he is pivotal and Kelso appears in the ensemble as well.  He sings a duet early on with Stark Sands called "Take What You've Got" and it's one of my favorite numbers in the show.  Sands' character, Charlie, is in the middle of an identity crisis and doesn't quite know what he wants or where he wants to go.  His father expects him to take over the family business but he is insistent on moving to London with his girlfriend.  He seeks out Harry for advice and that is where the song takes place.  Kelso's voice is incredible, and he really owned the song.  What I loved seeing is the way that Kelso can transition from playing a character like Sky (in Mamma Mia!) or Fiyero, who are both the romantic male leads of their shows, to Harry who was much more rough and earthy.  Granted, Harry doesn't have quite as much to do in the show as Fiyero or Sky, but I was very impressed by his versatility in that respect.  He understudies the role of Charlie Price, and I would LOVE to see him go on in the role because I think he would be amazing. Love his voice. He is actually on as Charlie the majority of this week.  AND he couldn't have been nicer after the show!  Go see Kinky Boots!
