(Delayed) Musical Monday! Norbert Leo Butz in Catch Me If You Can!

For today's Musical Monday, I will be writing a bit about seeing Norbert Leo Butz in Catch Me If You Can on Broadway in 2011.  Butz originated the role of Fiyero in Wicked on Broadway, and (deservedly) won a 2011 Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his role in Catch Me If You Can.  He was absolutely phenomenal in the show, with an incredible voice and stage presence.  Character aside, whenever he walked onstage, the audience knew that they were seeing a very impressive performer in front of them.  Butz totally owned the stage whenever he was on it, his dancing was very impressive and his voice is as great as ever.  It was really weird to see him playing a fatherly figure to Aaron Tveit, because I think of them both as Fiyero too often.  It goes to show how versatile he is.

Initially going into the show I was very upset that Norbert got nominated for a Tony and not Aaron, however coming out of the show I understood more. Aaron's role was a very impressive singer/dancer type, with some great dialouge and chances to act, but Norbert's role was much deeper in terms of acting and then the singing and dancing came second.  I would highly recommend buying the cast recording, and getting back to the Neil Simon Theatre to see "Big Fish" before it closes at the end of December, because Butz seems to always walk away with incredible reviews and word of mouth, and he deserves it all.  He was excellent, and I hope to see him onstage again soon!
