GRAMMY Sunday! Fun Facts about Wicked's Grammy Winning OBCR!

Wicked fans would die without their copy of Wicked's Original Broadway Cast Recording.  The 19 track disc contains most of the songs from the show, and features the voices of huge Broadway names like Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Joel Grey, Norbert Leo Butz and Carole Shelley.

The album was recorded on November 10, 2003 and released on December 16, 2003, to commercial and critical success.  It initially peaked on the Billboard 200 chart at #125, but reached a new peak of #77 in 2011 (a highly impressive feat for a cast recording).

On November 30, 2006, the record was certified Platinum in the United States (meaning the album has shipped/sold one million copies within a country), and certified double platinum on November 8, 2010.  As of February 2014, the album has sold roughly 2.5 million copies in the United States alone.

The album was awarded the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

Since its initial release, the album has been re-released three times in the U.S.  Once for the show's 5th Anniversary in 2008, featuring a second disk of foreign and pop recordings of different songs from the show.  It was re-released with an updated essay, the show's new updated artwork, and an updated second disk for the show's 10th Anniversary in 2013, as well as released as a vinyl.

In addition to the Original Broadway Cast, two foreign cast recordings have been made for overseas productions.  In 2007, a German cast recording was released (starring Willemijin Verkaik and Lucy Scherer) and in 2008 a Japanese cast recording was released (artwork not currently available).
